What it enhances.

Electrosurgical pens are medical devices used in electrosurgery, a technique that uses high-frequency electrical currents to cut, coagulate or remove tissue. Surgeons use them in dermatology, general surgery, oncology, plastic surgery and more to perform precise operations with minimal bleeding. Clean incisions minimize tissue trauma, reduce blood loss and preserve the body's natural healing pathways, so patients benefit from fewer complications and faster recoveries.

Key components

  • Pen body: lightweight and ergonomically designed for easy handling and control.
  • Electrode tip: the electrode that applies current to the tissue, available in different shapes for cutting, coagulating or vaporizing.
  • Power source: an electrosurgical generator supplies the high-frequency current (typically between 200 kHz and 4 MHz) that cuts or coagulates tissue.
  • Control buttons: buttons on the pen, or a foot pedal, let the surgeon control power settings and switch between cutting and coagulating modes.

How electrosurgical pens work

  • Cutting mode: a continuous current is delivered to a small, focused area, generating heat that cuts through tissue by vaporizing the cells.
  • Coagulation mode: the current is delivered in pulses, creating heat that causes blood vessels to coagulate and close, reducing bleeding.
  • Blend mode: a combination of both, used for more delicate procedures where precise cutting and tissue sealing are both needed.

Applications

  • Surgical procedures: cutting and cauterization in general surgery, gynaecology, urology and plastic surgery.
  • Dermatology: removing lesions, warts and other skin abnormalities.
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery: managing tissue during tumor removal or gum surgery.

Advantages

  • Precision: the focused current allows more precise cuts with less damage to surrounding tissue.
  • Reduced bleeding: coagulation seals blood vessels and minimizes blood loss.
  • Minimally invasive: electrosurgery often allows smaller incisions and quicker healing.
